Overview of judging appointment from Miss Amanda Rees

I would like to thank the WCC of NSW for asking me to visit your lovely country, Australia for my first time, to judge the Pembrokes and Cardigans.

A huge thank you to Joanne McCann and John Burgess for their super hosting before, during and after the show. Joanne and John are such an asset to the Corgi world.

Next, thank you to the well-mannered exhibitors who entered under me. It was lovely to meet you all. I was sorry that the day didn’t allow us to meet and chat after the judging concluded. I would have loved to meet you all properly to discuss your dogs, pedigrees and plans for the future.

Your dogs were happy, good tempered and beautifully presented. Thank you for taking the time to put them down in first class condition and handled and showing so well.

I was pleased to see some young handlers in the ring, as this is a positive for the future. I hope they stay involved with our beautiful breeds.

Thank you to my jolly and able Steward, Craig Fynmore and his skilled photographer daughter, Jess. It was great to meet you both and I hope you see you again in the future.

I was very pleased with the overall quality of both Cardigans and Pembrokes. I would have liked a larger number of Cardigans to go over, as the entry was lower than for the Pembrokes.

In many countries across the globe, the numbers of kennels and exhibits being shown of both Cardigans and Pembrokes has dropped over the last few years, due to the docking ban, the Covid pandemic, the expense of our hobby, aging exhibitors and young people having other interests. I was glad to see a thriving, enthusiastic and dedicated Corgi community showing at the WCC of NSW. Long may it continue.

As anybody who has taken the trouble to talk to me will know, no external matters will influence the way I assess the Corgi in front of me. I like to give extra time to the puppies, novice handlers and any dog who is a little preoccupied I might ask to move to another spot in the ring to relax and refocus in order to show itself to advantage.

Finally, I wished there had been more than 3 placings to award in each class, as many quality exhibits went unrecognised. Well done to you all and I wish you all the very best of luck for the future.

Amanda Rees
