The Welsh Corgi Club of NSW offers sincerest condolences to the Maddox family on the passing of Teresa Maddox, a breeder of immense standing and reputation whose Salvenik prefix became synonymous with quality, influence, and dedication in both Pembroke and Cardigan Welsh Corgis.
Her impact on modern pedigrees, in both Pembrokes and Cardigans, remains evident today.
Even in her final weeks, Teresa’s thoughts remained with the breed that had shaped so much of her life. Her commitment and quiet determination were hallmarks of her character, and her lifelong dedication to Corgis never wavered. Her resilience, strength, and deep passion for the breed were evident to the very end.
The wider Welsh Corgi community has lost an influential and inspirational figure whose knowledge, intensity and reverence for our breeds set a lasting standard. Teresa died peacefully in hospital after a courageous battle with cancer.
Salvenik was established with Pembrokes in 1976, with Cardigans added in 1982. Teresa’s journey with Corgis began in the mid-1970s when her father purchased a Pembroke as a family pet. Encouraged and supported by her parents — her mother Pat often ringside — Teresa quickly found her place within the breed. What began as a family interest grew into a lifelong pursuit of excellence in breeding, exhibiting, and judging.
In earlier years, while living in Essex — later in Humberside, and eventually near Welshpool just across the Welsh border — Teresa became a familiar and valued presence at both open and championship shows. Rarely absent from the major fixtures, her entries, often a full team, helped sustain breed classes at shows during times when exhibitor numbers fluctuated. Her support of these shows was not incidental; it reflected a deep sense of responsibility to the health and visibility of the breed.
As well as enjoying her own successes she was proud of the achievements of those carrying her breeding at home or abroad. Certainly, the Corgi world was her life, and she appreciated the support of her circle of close friends in Britain and beyond.
In her early breeding years, Teresa worked closely with respected breeder Peggy Franks, incorporating the influential Pengavin lines into her developing Salvenik program. She campaigned her first Champion, Ch Pengavin Plane Jet, a beautiful tricolour male extensively at both open and championship level, dedicating countless miles and hours to building his record.
Her perseverance was rewarded when he gained his title — an achievement that marked the beginning of what would become an extraordinary and carefully structured breeding program. Two influential mentors shaped Teresa’s breeding vision: the late Barbara Lloyd of the Kilvewood Pembrokes and the late Sonnica Godden of the Kentwood Cardigans. Teresa acknowledged both women for their expertise, knowledge, and the quality stock that helped form her foundation lines.
Teresa line-bred with clarity of purpose, doubling on strengths and repeating matings when she believed in the result. Correct breed type was never negotiable. Outline, balance, sound movement, and true breed character remained central to every decision she made.
A defining chapter for Salvenik began when Teresa acquired Kilvewood Ode To Joy of Salvenik. Recognising her quality and potential as a foundation brood bitch, Teresa planned her matings with precision, selecting Ch Cordach Tribune to consolidate type and strengthen pedigree depth. The resulting litter proved exceptional. Teresa not only campaigned Sweet Tribute and Sweet Keepsake to multiple CC wins herself, but also placed littermates strategically abroad, ensuring the strength of the line extended beyond Britain. Sweet Thoughts, Sweet Vision and Sweet Times went on to influence breeding programs in the United States, New Zealand, and Europe — decisions that reflected Teresa’s long-term vision and international outlook.
The celebrated “Sweet Litter” would become the defining chapter in Salvenik history. It included:
Each became a champion in their respective countries and all proved influential producers. Through them, Salvenik bloodlines became firmly established internationally.
Salvenik Sweet Thoughts ROMX made a lasting impact in the United States, strengthening English type within American pedigrees.
Salvenik Sweet Vision became a significant contributor to New Zealand breeding programs.
Salvenik Sweet Times, International and French Champion, carried the Salvenik influence into continental Europe.
These dogs were not simply show winners — they were foundation builders whose influence continues to appear in modern pedigrees worldwide.
Further influential dogs followed under her stewardship, including Ch Salvenik Super Chance, Ch Rosewood Set Sail To Salvenik, Ch Salvenik Star Made, and Salvenik Star Performer. Teresa was not simply breeding for numbers; she line-bred selectively, doubled on strengths, and was unafraid to use repeat matings when she believed in the result. She co-owned dogs internationally, maintained strong relationships with overseas breeders, and welcomed key dogs back to Britain to strengthen her program.
Above all, Teresa bred with conviction. Correct breed type was never negotiable, and she valued outline, balance, sound movement, and true Pembroke and Cardigan character above fashion or fleeting trends. Her eye for quality was disciplined and consistent, and she bred with a clear understanding of what she wanted to preserve and improve.
Through thoughtful placement and collaboration with breeders abroad, Salvenik bloodlines became firmly established beyond the United Kingdom. From the celebrated “Sweet” litter — including Salvenik Sweet Thoughts in the United States, Salvenik Sweet Vision in New Zealand, and Salvenik Sweet Times in Europe — to Salvenik Super Chance, who became both a champion and influential sire in New Zealand, Teresa ensured the Salvenik influence extended across continents. Descendants continue to feature prominently in modern pedigrees worldwide.
Under Teresa’s stewardship, and across nearly five decades, Salvenik produced multiple UK Champions in both breeds, alongside numerous overseas champions. Salvenik dogs accumulated well over a hundred Challenge Certificates and achieved Championship Show Group placements, Best in Show awards, and multiple Top Dog and Top Stud honours. Salvenik is understood to have produced approximately*:
Salvenik Corgis achieved Top Dog, Top Stud, Top Brood, Top Puppy, Top Breeder, and Top Kennel awards in both Pembrokes and Cardigans — an extraordinary dual-breed accomplishment.
Among many standouts was Ch NZ Ch Salvenik Super Chance JW, who won Best in Show at his first (and largest) show in New Zealand and went on to sire over 40 champions worldwide.
Ch Salvenik Star Made accumulated 24 CCs and 13 Res CCs, numerous Group placements, Best in Show awards, and multiple Top Pembroke titles.
Teresa’s influence was equally significant in Cardigan Welsh Corgis. Her foundation began with Kentwood Edwin, bred by the highly respected Sonnica Godden, whose encouragement Teresa always acknowledged. Edwin gained his title and laid the groundwork for a serious and thoughtful Cardigan breeding program.
Kentwood Gwenda followed as an important foundation bitch, producing progeny who would go on to make their mark both in the United Kingdom and overseas. Among these was Am Ch Salvenik Sea Treasure, who made a meaningful impact in the United States. Gwenda’s influence continued through subsequent generations, reinforcing the strength and consistency of Teresa’s breeding approach.
A daughter of Kentwood Gwenda became the dam of Ch Kilvewood Pie In The Sky, who came to Teresa following Barbara Lloyd’s sadly early death and went on to become a multiple CC winner, including two Best of Breed awards at Crufts.
A Gwenda son sired Ch Jogela George for Salvenik and Jogela Tara for Salvenik, bred by David Baxter. Tara became an important brood bitch within the Salvenik Cardigan line. She was the dam of Ros Gardiner’s Ch Salvenik Snurge of Elmsmere and of Ch Salvenik Secret Dream.
Secret Dream, when mated to her uncle Ch Jogela George for Salvenik, produced Ch Salvenik Secret Wish, further consolidating the strength and continuity of the line.
Further prominence came with Ch Antoc Double O Seven for Salvenik, Top Stud for seven consecutive years and widely regarded as one of the most influential sires of his time. Through carefully planned matings, he produced multiple champions, including Ch Salvenik Secret Agent of Elmsmere, Best of Breed at Crufts and multiple Top Cardigan award winner, and Ch/Am Ch Salvenik Spy Who Loved Me, strengthening Salvenik’s reputation internationally.
In both breeds, Teresa demonstrated the same hallmarks: a discerning eye, an unwavering commitment to correct breed type, and a dedication to breeding dogs that were not only successful in the show ring but sound, balanced, and true to standard. Her impact on modern pedigrees, in both Pembrokes and Cardigans, remains evident today.
Few kennels have left such a measurable imprint across both breeds.
Teresa was also an internationally respected judge. She awarded Challenge Certificates in both Pembroke and Cardigan Welsh Corgis, judged at Crufts and Welsh Corgi League Championship Shows, and officiated worldwide including:
Her judging career reflected the same disciplined eye and commitment to breed type that defined her breeding program.
Teresa served on the Executive Committee of the Welsh Corgi League and on the Committee of the Cardigan Welsh Corgi Association, further demonstrating her dedication beyond the show ring.
The Corgi world was not simply a pastime for Teresa — it was her life’s work. She valued deeply the friendships formed over decades and took immense pride in the success of those who carried her breeding forward.
Through the dogs she bred, the pedigrees she shaped, the breeders and exhibitors she influenced, Teresa Maddox leaves an enduring mark on both Pembroke and Cardigan Welsh Corgis worldwide.
The show rings will not be the same without her presence, nor the conversations, counsel and quiet intensity she brought to them.
The Welsh Corgi Club of NSW extends its heartfelt sympathy to her brother Bob, her close friends, and to the global Corgi community who mourn her passing.
