The Welsh Corgi Club of Queensland once again put on a fantastic weekend of Welsh Corgis, welcoming exhibitors from across Australia to the Dogs Queensland Sports Grounds at Durack on Sunday, 5 July, for their Championship and Open Specialty Shows.
With close to 100 exhibits entered across the two shows, there was plenty of quality in both breeds, making for a competitive but thoroughly enjoyable day. As always, one of the highlights of any specialty is catching up with friends from interstate, sharing stories around the rings and celebrating our wonderful breeds together.
One of the hallmarks of a specialty show is the opportunity to have your exhibit assessed by judges with a genuine appreciation and understanding of the breed. This year’s appointments brought together two respected Australian judges, each offering exhibitors a valuable opinion from different perspectives.
The Welsh Corgi Club of NSW was proudly represented by 11 members, exhibiting across both breeds. For Cardigans, Club members, or dogs they had bred, who made the journey north were Sharon Hall and Dee Milthorpe and for Pembrokes, Joan Hutton, Robin Robertson, Gloria Woodward, Sheree Kilby, Liana Bettison, David Dawes, Robyn Smith, Donna Borg and Victoria Lee. All NSW members enjoyed the Queensland hospitality.
The Championship Show was judged by Miss Lorell Sheppard (Victoria), whose lifelong involvement with Pembroke Welsh Corgis and service to the Welsh Corgi Club of Victoria made her an ideal choice to officiate at this year’s Championship Specialty.
Lorell has literally grown up in the dog world. She was raised in a family involved with Welsh Corgi Pembrokes and Australian Kelpies under the Bekaa kennel prefix, giving her a lifelong connection with the Working Dog Group. Later, she successfully bred and raced greyhounds for many years before returning her focus to conformation, exhibiting and breeding Pembrokes and British Bulldogs.
She is actively involved in the Victorian dog community, serving on the committees of both the Welsh Corgi Club of Victoria and the Working Dog Club of Victoria. Lorell commenced her judging career in 2020 and has been steadily building experience across the Working Dog breeds, making her appointment to judge the Queensland Specialty particularly fitting given her lifelong involvement with Welsh Corgis.

The afternoon Open Show was judged by Mr Thomas Ray (Queensland), an experienced Dogs Australia conformation judge who has long been involved with the Queensland dog community and is well known to exhibitors throughout the state.
Thomas Ray is a highly experienced Queensland conformation judge based in Brisbane. He is licensed through Dogs Australia and has judged extensively throughout Queensland and interstate. He has also been a long-time contributor to the sport through stewarding and supporting breed clubs, including the Welsh Corgi Club of Queensland.
While the Open Show traditionally provides exhibitors with an additional opportunity to present their dogs under a different opinion, Thomas brought considerable judging experience and a strong understanding of conformation to the assignment.

Congratulations to all exhibitors who continue to support the Neuter competition. These classes celebrate the enduring quality of our Welsh Corgis and provide an opportunity for retired champions and much-loved companions to continue enjoying the show ring while demonstrating the soundness and breed type that remain hallmarks of quality breeding.
Our Cardigan members enjoyed a highly successful Championship Show, with Sharon Hall leading the way. Her Giandarra team demonstrated outstanding depth, with five exhibits entered, producing Best of Breed, Dog Challenge, two class winners and numerous class placings. The highlight was Ch. Giandarra Closer To The Hart (AI), awarded Best of Breed, while the kennel’s young exhibits once again showcased the quality and consistency that Sharon has worked so hard to develop over many years.
It was also a wonderful day for the next generation, and whilst not a Club member, special mention to Dosslynne Treasure The Moment (AI) owned by Mr S Pryor, impressing the judge to claim the Bitch Challenge, Runner Up Best of Breed and ultimately Junior in Show—a tremendous achievement for such a promising young exhibit.
Congratulations also to Dee and Leon Milthorpe, whose breeding continues to be recognised through quality exhibits in the ring. Their breeding was represented by Llondee Roll The Dice, Llondee Macaroni N Cheese, and home-bred champion Ch. Throdice Classic Style (AI), reflecting their long-standing dedication to the Cardigan Welsh Corgi and the ongoing influence of their breeding program across Australia.
Together, Sharon, Dee and Leon continue to be wonderful ambassadors for the Cardigan Welsh Corgi. Their commitment to preserving breed type, producing quality dogs and supporting specialty competition is something the Welsh Corgi Club of NSW is immensely proud of, and their achievements in Queensland were richly deserved.

Liana Bettison enjoyed an exceptional Championship Show, culminating in the prestigious Best in Show award with Ch. Aziah Be What May (AI). Along the way she also claimed Best of Breed, Bitch Challenge and Open in Show, while her promising youngster Aziah And So It Should Be (AI) was awarded Minor Puppy in Show. Liana’s successful day continued with Ch. Dawco Noheroes Amongst Thieves At Aziah (AI), owned in partnership with David Dawes and Robyn Smith, earning both the Reserve Dog Challenge and Australian Bred in Show—a wonderful reflection of the strength and consistency of the Aziah breeding program.
Joan and Bob Hutton also celebrated excellent results, with C.I.B. Grand Ch. Bojojamile Bottoms Up (AI) placing second in Open Dog, while Ch. Bojojamile Boot Scooting impressed the judge by winning the Intermediate Bitch class.
Congratulations also to Victoria Lee, whose exhibits were recognised with second place in Intermediate Bitch for Ch. Velcalle Eighteenth Amendment At Aziah SPRD and second place in Junior Bitch with Velcalle Song Of The Valkyrie At Aziah (AI).
Donna Borg‘s Nesbo Sweet Chilli Pepper made a pleasing impression, placing third in Baby Puppy Bitch. Robin Robertson enjoyed success with Ch. Anwyl Fast Forward Solo Star (AI) N.SPRD TK.S., which placed second in Australian Bred Dog, and was also represented in the Open Bitch class with Ch. Anwyl Good Morning Star Shine (AI) TK.S. The Anwyl prefix also celebrated a class win when Ch. Anwyl Light After Darkness, owned by Mrs J. McCann & Mr J. Burgess, was awarded first in Open Dog.
Gloria Woodward also enjoyed an outstanding Championship Show, headed by Baby Puppy in Show with the delightful Aberlee Like Dreamers Do. Her success continued throughout the day with Ch. Aberlee Shine For Me winning Australian Bred Bitch, Ch. Aberlee Diamond In The Sun placing second in Open Bitch, Idelia Honey I’m Stuck On You awarded second in Puppy Bitch, Idelia Love Me Do placing third in Junior Bitch, and Idelia Don’t Pass Me By taking second in Junior Dog. It was a wonderful showcase of Gloria’s dedication to breeding, exhibiting and mentoring, with her dogs consistently featuring amongst the placings across a range of classes.
Sheree Kilby continued to fly the flag for the Pembrokes, enjoying an excellent Championship Show. Grand Ch. SOM. Aberlee Rollin In Sunshine placed third in a competitive Open Dog class of four, Idelia Honey Im Stuck On You finished second in the Puppy Bitch class of three, and Ch. Tooshort Ready Set Lets Roll placed third in the largest Intermediate Bitch class of nine. The highlight of Sheree’s day came when Ch. Neut Ch. Aberlee Reign Of Love was awarded Best Neuter of Breed before going on to claim Runner Up Neuter in Show—a fitting reward for a quality exhibit and a wonderful achievement for Sheree and her team.

The afternoon Open Show, judged by Mr Thomas Ray (Queensland), rounded out a wonderful day of competition and gave exhibitors the opportunity to present their dogs under a second opinion. There was plenty to celebrate, with Ch. Izalab Rock N Roll awarded Best in Show, while the Cardigans enjoyed a memorable result with Ch. Mandene Seasons In The Sun taking Best of Breed, Australian Bred in Show and Runner Up Best in Show.
WCCNSW members again featured among the day’s successes, with Liana Bettison and Victoria Lee awarded Junior in Show with Velcalle Song of the Valkyrie at Aziah (AI). It was pleasing to see our members continue to be represented across both specialties, reinforcing the strength of New South Wales exhibitors and breeding programs at the Queensland Specialty weekend.

One of the greatest strengths of the Welsh Corgi Club of NSW is the passion and dedication of our members. Whether breeding, exhibiting, mentoring newcomers or supporting fellow enthusiasts, their commitment to the preservation and promotion of Welsh Corgis is something we are incredibly proud of.
The Queensland Specialty weekend was another wonderful example of our members’ involvement and the contribution they continue to make to our breeds, both within New South Wales and across Australia. Through exhibiting, breeding, co-owning and supporting quality dogs, WCCNSW members were well represented throughout the weekend, with many enjoying well-deserved success in both the Championship and Open Shows.

Specialty shows are about much more than ribbons and trophies. They provide an opportunity for breeders and exhibitors to come together, share knowledge, celebrate each other’s successes and continue building the friendships that make our Welsh Corgi community so special. We are proud to see our members actively involved in specialty shows across Australia and look forward to celebrating many more achievements together.
Overall, our 11 WCCNSW members enjoyed an exceptional Championship Show, with success spanning every level of competition—from Baby Puppy through to Best in Show, together with numerous Challenge, Breed, Neuter and Class awards. Their achievements are a wonderful reflection of the dedication, passion and commitment our members continue to bring to the Pembroke Welsh Corgi.
